District Congress Committee, Leh Demands Saturday as Public Holiday in Ladakh

VoL Desk, June 15: In a recent press conference, the District Congress Committee Leh made a formal demand to declare Saturday as a public holiday in all government offices of Ladakh, including both the Union Territory Secretariat and District-level offices.

The opposition Councillor Smanla Nurbu addressed the press conference, stating that they have taken up the issue with the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, who has expressed willingness to take necessary action.

Councillor Smanla Nurbu highlighted that while other parts of India already observe Saturday as a holiday, Jammu and Kashmir state had been excluded from this practice. However, now that Ladakh has become a separate Union Territory, it is advisable to align with the rest of the country and designate Saturday as a holiday.

The demand by the District Congress Committee reflects the sentiment of many residents and government employees in Ladakh who have expressed the need for a standardized weekly holiday. The move aims to provide a consistent work-life balance for employees and ensure harmony with the rest of the country.

The LG Ladakh office on tweeter acknowledged that the Councillor Saspol, Smanla Norboo was called on H’LG Brig (Dr) BD Mishra and requested to consider adopting the,”5-day workweek” in all offices of Ladakh.

The LG has directed Advisor Ladakh and Secretary to the LG to examine the proposal for its effect on various institutions and desired work output.

Smanla also requested the HLG to initiate the process of renaming Govt High School of Likir and to dedicate it to the memory of Vir Chakra Awardee, Late Subedar Major Tsewang Morup. The LG stated that it is being perused and it will be done soon to honour the memory of the brave soldier.
