Boat capsizes in Jhelum River at Gandbal, death toll mounts to six

Srinagar, 16 April: 26 individuals, including school children, were aboard a boat that capsized while crossing the Jhelum River from Gandabal Soiteng to Batawara. Tragically, six bodies have been recovered, while the 20 individuals are missing.

The incident occurred on Tuesday morning in the Gandbal Nowgam area, according to officials. A rescue operation is currently underway, with teams from the State Disaster Response Force mobilized to assist.

The Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir, the Inspector General of Police for Kashmir, the Deputy Commissioner of Srinagar, and the Senior Superintendent of Police for Srinagar are personally overseeing the rescue efforts at Gandbal Batwara. The Srinagar Administration, along with the SDRF, NDRF, and Police, are actively engaged in the operation.

Expressing deep sorrow over the tragedy, the Lieutenant Governor has directed the administration to extend all necessary assistance to the affected families.

  1. The bridge work started by Mebooba Mufti five years back.110metre bridge just on the outskirts of Srinagar, not yet completed .Work stalled when Assembly was dissolved. This shows how PMs development propaganda works in Kashmir. Precious young lives were lost.
