MHA Ladakh Meeting: Sub-Committee Formed by LAB, KDA; Hunger Strike Abandoned with Next Meeting Scheduled

VoL Desk, Feb. 19: Following a crucial meeting between the leaders of Apex Body Leh and the Kargil Democratic Alliance with the high-powered committee of the Union Home Ministry in Delhi today, Ladakh leaders have decided to cancel their planned hunger strike set for February 20.

The leaders collectively agreed to establish a joint sub-committee to delve into the specifics of the issues and further engage in discussions with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

Another meeting has been slated for February 24 to address Ladakh’s primary demands, which include Statehood for Ladakh, incorporation of Ladakh into the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, and the formation of an exclusive Public Service Commission for Ladakh, as stated in a joint press release issued by LAB and KDA post-meeting.

The newly formed sub-committee comprises Thupstan Chhewang, Mr. Chering Dorjay Lakrook, and Mr. Nawang Rigzin Jora representing the Apex Body, along with Mr. Qamar Ali Akhoon, Haji Asgar Ali Karbalai, and Mr. Sajjad Kargili representing the KDA. The details of the sub-committee formation and its members have been communicated to Shri Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Union Home Secretary.

All sub-committee members are currently in Delhi and are optimistic about productive discussions at the upcoming meeting, as mentioned in the press release by the Apex Body and KDA.

In light of this significant development, the Ladakh leaders have decided to temporarily suspend their plan to initiate a hunger strike from tomorrow (February 20, 2024).
