Local Voices Challenge Detachment Orders of Teachers in Education Department

VoL Desk, Oct. 12: In response to directives issued by the Deputy Secretary of the School Education Department in Ladakh, endorsed by the Chief Education Officer of Kargil, Zonal Education Officers have been instructed to relocate teachers to their original positions. The orders mandate teachers in their respective zones to revert to their original posts within three days, ensuring strict compliance and notifying the relevant ZEO Office accordingly.

ZEOs have also published a list of teachers who were temporarily assigned to different locations, including those outside the Union Territory of Ladakh.

According to information obtained by Voice of Ladakh, 28 teachers/masters were assigned to other schools on a need basis. Additionally, 32 teachers were placed in different schools due to medical reasons, while 15 teachers/masters were relocated based on rationalization.

Moreover, 22 non-teaching staff members from the Education Department were working in various schools or departments, and 26 teaching or non-teaching staff were deployed in departments unrelated to education.

However, the District Congress Committee expressed their opposition to the recent detachment order, contending that these teacher were attached during the rationalization process, where schools with low enrollments were merged with nearby institutions.

Councillor Shakar, Zakir Hussain, criticized the decision, stating that the UT Administration made this choice without adequate consultation with local administration and public representatives in Kargil. He further emphasized that this abrupt decision, especially when exams are approaching, could adversely affect the academic progress of school-going children.

The Village Education Committee and parents of Shilikchay village opposed the detachment move, asserting that the majority of teachers in their school were appointed on an attachment basis, leading to improved school performance and increased student enrollment in recent years.

Both the Councillor and the Village Education Committee of Shilikchay have appealed to the UT Administration to rescind the order immediately.
