Drass Town Unites in Bandh, Demands District Status

VoL Desk, July 14: Drass Town and its neighboring areas in Kargil District of Ladakh witnessed a complete shutdown on Thursday as the residents voiced their demand for district status.

A committee, representing various political, social, religious, transportation, and business organizations, called for the bandh in solidarity with the ongoing plea for district status.

As a result, all commercial establishments remained closed, and transportation services were suspended throughout the region. Locals highlight that Drass, being one of the prominent and historically significant towns in Ladakh, has persistently sought district status, raising the issue with higher authorities.

The protest unfolded shortly after news broke that the Union Home Ministry and Ladakh Administration may potentially fulfill the longstanding demand for the establishment of two additional districts in the Union Territory, along with several administrative units, following careful assessment of the area and population.

According to sources, the Union Home Ministry and Ladakh administration are actively considering the creation of Nubra and Zanskar as new districts in Ladakh, taking into account the local sentiments and aspirations.
