AD Food inaugurates onsite training, orientation for wheat fortification for millers of Kargil

Kargil, July 13: Additional Director, Food Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Consumers Affairs Kargil, Khanzada Mohd Usman today inaugurated onsite training and orientation for wheat fortification for millers at SVRF Mill Kargil.

Food Safety Officer Kargil, Nayeem Ahmad was also present on the occasion. Both the officers inspected the mill and the premix blend feeder.

As anemia is a significant public health concern in Ladakh, particularly among women and children, the FCS&CA, Health and Medical Education, UT Administration Ladakh have started this initiative in both districts of the UT.

The officers informed that wheat fortification with iron, folic acid, and vitamin B12 can help tackle the high prevalence of anemia in the region. They further added that Iron, folic acid, and vitamins B12 are critical nutrients for various body functions.

As such, this initiative has great potential to control anemia in the population and has been introduced as a cost-effective intervention at the local level.

On the occasion, a detailed orientation-cum-practical training on fortified products, strategies for addressing micronutrient deficiencies and maintaining the records was made by trainer from Central Food Technological Research Institute, Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CFTRI-CSIR) and technical support by Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), Karnataka Health Promotion Trust (KHPT). Besides millers, officials from the Food Safety Department and CA&PD were also present.
