Two Truck Drivers Rescued After Avalanche Strikes Shaitani Nalla at Zojila

Srinagar-Kargil Road to Temporarily Close for Widening Work Due to Avalanches

VoL Desk, April 17: An avalanche struck Shaitani Nalla at Zojila today, burying two trucks that had been traveling on the road at the time. The incident occurred at 9:00 am and resulted in the trucks rolling deep into a gorge.

The Kargil Police, Border Roads Organization (BRO) personnel, and the Indian Army quickly responded to the incident and swung into action to rescue the injured drivers. Despite the difficult terrain and harsh weather conditions, the rescue teams managed to extract the drivers from the wreckage.

Two of the drivers were critically injured and one suffered minor injuries. The critically injured drivers were immediately referred to Drass for treatment. The police officers on the scene provided jackets to the drivers to prevent frostbite, given the cold weather conditions at the location.

The authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution while traveling on this route, particularly during the current weather conditions. They have also commended the efforts of the rescue teams for their swift and efficient response.

In light of recent and repetitive avalanches on the Srinagar-Kargil road, authorities have deemed it necessary to widen the road for increased safety measures. As a result, traffic on the road will be suspended on the 18th and 19th of April, 2023 to facilitate the widening work.

The decision was made in light of the recurring natural calamities that have made the road unsafe for commuters. Authorities have advised people to plan their journeys accordingly and take alternate means of transportations during the two-day closure.
