Ladakh receives first snowfall of this winter; people concerned for winter stocking

VoL Desk, Nov. 14: The twin districts of Ladakh, Kargil and Leh, received the first snowfall of this winter season today alarming the plausible closure of Zojila Pass for whole winter as the merchants have not completed the stocking of essential commodities for winter season.

The fresh snowfall is a good omen for the farmers as they faced huge loss this summer due to drought. However, stocking of essential commodities for winter season has not made yet which is a concern with this snowfall, said a shopkeeper in Kargil Bazar, Ajaz Ali.

I request the Administration to try their best to reopen the Zojila pass for vehicular traffic to ensure proper stocking of essential commodities, Ajaz added.

An elderly man said that the snowfall will surely cause survival to trees that were on the verge to dead. However, snowfall at this time is not much beneficial in comparison to mid winter of which the snow would last longer.

A wholeseller in Kargil market said that he supplies goods including essential commodities to retailers in different parts of the district. While he has not made the stocking for winter yet. He said that only 30 percent of the winter goods have received in storeroom while 70 percent are loaded in trucks stranded on the way due to the fresh snowfall.

He also appealed the Administration to reopen the road to ensure stocking of goods for the winter solistice.

He said that earlier stocking is not possible for food items that mostly expires in six months. The Administration direct us to make stocking on time while in frequent market checks they destroy most of our goods causing huge loss to the shopkeepers.
