Tussle resurface between Leh and Kargil taxi union

KARGIL, JULY 10, 2021: President Taxi Union Kargil Mohammad Ibrahim in a press conference expressed resentment over alleged restriction on ply of Kargili vehicles in Leh district despite of having permit for movement in entire Ladakh.

The restriction row erupted when the NHPC limited hired 20 vehicles from Taxi Union Kargil for movement of Parliamentary Standing Committee. When the vehicles moved towards Leh, the contract with the NHPC is on the verge to get cancelled due to interference from Taxi Union Leh, said Ibrahim. However, no official move for cancellation has received yet, the president added.

“The Taxi Union Leh does not want the taxis of Kargil to ply on inner routes of Ladakh. As Kargil is an integral part of Ladakh and its our constitutional right to move anywhere. We have also secured permit for movement. Earlier it was eligible for erstwhile state of J&K and our new permit is for entire Ladakh UT”, Ibrahim explained.

“We want our taxis to ply freely on these routes without any interruption from anybody. We appeal the UT administration, District Leh and Kargil Administration to take immediate and necessary action to resolve the issue.  The current contract is from 10 July to 14 July 2021, thus from tomorrow (10 July) we want our vehicles to move on this route.

“We are facing this challenge from time to time. Thus, on 30 April 2021 we had raised the issue with the LG via a memorandum. Two months have passed but we have received no response from their side. On 5th July we met with the LG during his tour to Kargil and raised our concern but again received no response yet.

“Due to this sudden issue we had to appear in this press conference. We have raised the issue with DM Kargil who has forwarded the issue to the Secretary transport.  We have raised the issue with SP and ARTO also. We want to allow our vehicles to ply freely in entire Ladakh as we have permit, which is also our legal right.
