KARGIL, JUNE 17, 2021: Department of Botany, Government Degree College (GDC), Kargil organized an online webinar entitled “Role of Plants in Combatting Desertification” on Thursday 17^h June to celebrate World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought 2021.

Dr. Ovaid Akhtar Assistant Professor Department of Botany, Kamla Nehru Institute of Physical and Social Science Sultanpur was the resource person on the occasion. Dr. Amina Qari, Principal and Dr. Javed Naqi Vice Principal, Govt.  Degree College, Kargil were chief patron and patron respectively.

The program embarked on a brief welcome speech by Dr. Javed Naqi. At the initial stage of the program, Prof Ahsan Ali highlighted the importance of the day. Prof Ahsan Ali introduced the resource person and his achievements to the audience.

Dr. Ovaid Akhtar presented the keynote talk on desertification and drought and briefed about the anthropogenic causes by giving several examples which our earth is facing nowadays. In his talk, he highlighted about, how desertification and drought can affect the globe and global community as well as social life. He further explained the role of plants and how plantations can combat desertification and drought. The role of Arbuscular Micorhizae (root fungi) is important in the development of plants in every plant community, he explained how can plant accommodate root fungi in roots and how far and deep micorhiza can extend the reach of plants for better survival and development by several examples, to the audience.

Dr Ovaid also interacted personally with the students and very aptly took the questions asked by the participants and gave assurance to help in any manner in the interest of students.  At the end Dr. Imtiyaz Hussain presented the vote of thanks.
