LG Ladakh Inaugurates Ice Hockey Coaching Camp at Kargil

KARGIL JANUARY 20, 2021: Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor (LG), Ladakh Radha Krishna Mathur inaugurated first women Ice Hockey coaching camp at Biamathang Ice Hockey Rink Kargil here today.

Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor (CEC), LAHDC, Kargil Feroz Ahmad Khan, Deputy Commissioner/CEO, LAHDC, Kargil Baseer ul Haq Choudhary, Superintendent of Police Kargil Anayat Ali Choudhary, Director Tourism Kunzes Angmo, Director Animal and Sheep Husbandry Dr Muhammad Raza Abbassi, officers of Civil and Police administration besides a good number of sports lovers were present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, LG Mathur while expressing happiness over the conduct of the camp hoped that in future international and national level players will come up from this batch of players. He said that the aim of the Hon’ble Prime Minister is to augment sports from the grassroots to the higher level under Khelo India to ensure extensive participation of youth to generate international level players.

Terming the participation of girls in winters sports as a welcome step, the LG stated that participation of women in sports assumes significance as they are very important part of the society. He said that the participation of the girl players will inspire other girls to pursue winter sports.

The LG added that UT Administration is committed to promote more sports activities under Khelo India at a large scale and in this connection many activities are already happening across the UT. 

LG Mathur said that on the lines of Leh District, the establishment of an Astro Turf for Kargil district is planned.

The LG said that Ice Hockey is a natural game for Ladakh and the tough nature of ice and altitude of Kargil factor are an added advantage to the local players to compete and excel at the national and international level.

LG  Mathur also assured that the demand projected by the CEC Kargil pertaining  to infrastructure development of Khree Sultan Cho Sports Stadium Kargil and Biamathang Ice Hockey Rink will be considered.

CEC, LAHDC Kargil Feroz Ahmad Khan in his address said that Ice Hockey has attained a lot of popularity in Kargil and it is a historic moment that first time coaching camp for female ice hockey players has been organized in the district.

The CEC said that the LAHDC Kargil aims to promote Ice Hockey at every village and block level and said that the hard work of players is paying back as athletes are ready to participate in the upcoming UT level tournaments and for nationals also a team has been sent to Gulmarg Kashmir.

Khan also extended thanks to the LG Ladakh for promoting traditional as well as other winter sports in Kargil.

Deputy Commissioner Kargil Baseer ul Haq Choudhary in his address said the Administration has remained committed to promote sports activities in Kargil since 2019 under Khelo India. He said that there is a huge potential among the athletes of Kargil, however the spirit of sports culture has to be cultivated among all and the momentum has already picked up in this regard.

President District Olympic Association Kargil Haji Mirza Hussain extended thanks to the LG, guests, players and spectators for gracing the event.

25 female athletes are participating in the 10 days camp which has been organized by the LAHDC Kargil in collaboration with Kargil Olympic Association and Himalayan Sports and Culture Development Organization.

Later, the LG also met various public delegations at Tourist Facilitation Center (TFC) Kargil.

Scores of delegations and individuals including the Councillors of LAHDC, Kargil, BDC Chairpersons, PRI members, representatives of social organizations and individuals put forth their demands, developmental needs and grievances before the LG and sought his intervention in their resolution.

The LG gave a patient hearing to the issues projected by all delegations and assured them to consider them for appropriate follow up.
