Ladakh Admin to control stray dogs through Mission Mode Campaign
Leh, 07 Feb: The issue of stray dogs has been a constant and rising concern in Ladakh despite the various initiatives implemented and underway since the past years.
In this regard, Secretary Ravinder Kumar called a meeting with all stakeholders to discuss and develop means and measures for tackling the menace caused by stray dogs including threat to life, in a constructive and time-bound manner.
Dr. Tsewang Dorjey, Technical Officer, Department of Animal/Sheep Husbandry and Fisheries through a presentation highlighted ongoing initiatives under the Animal Birth Control Program of the Department viz vaccination, sterilization and informed the chair that a total of 22145 stray dogs have been sterilized by the Department since 2013.

Secretary Ravinder stated that all stakeholders must own the problem in order to succeed. He urged all concerned Departments viz Department of Animal/Sheep Husbandry and Fisheries, Municipal Cooperation, Wildlife Department and concerned NGOs to work in a coordinated manner and develop an Action Plan to deal with the issue.
He directed MC Leh to set up an exclusive team of stray dog catchers while ensuring that they are provided with proper gears, equipments and ensure their vaccination for their safety. Further, Secretary Ravinder directed MC Leh to mobilize the registration, vaccination and sterilization of pet dogs as well.
Food waste management in MC areas and streamlining food waste in army cantonments post discussions with the Army was also deliberated at length, further stressing on spreading awareness as part of the MCs Tsangda project.
Dr. Nurzin Angmo, CMO Leh informed the meeting that in the 2022, a total of 2000 dog bite cases were registered at SNM Hospital, with 232 cases registered so far in 2023.
Detailed deliberations were also held on controlling feral dogs causing uncountable loss to livestock as well as wildlife. Secretary Ravinder urged that an action plan be developed, including a dog census and assured the required financial support for implementing the plan of action. He also stressed on the need to involve the villages/local communities in the endeavors once chalked out.
Deputy Commissioner Leh Shrikant Suse, Dr. Zahida Bano, Director Urban Local Bodies, Dr M. Iqbal, CAHO, Animal Husbandry Department, Wildlife Wardens of Leh and Kargil, Project Coordinator Live to Rescue and other concerned officials Leh and Kargil attended the meeting.

The population of dogs also increasing in Kargil district especially in Hydery mohllah as the Army camp is quite near and the stray dogs Havre restricted the movement’s of the people .The school going children don’t dare to go for tuitions.we have approached the concern dept many times but turn a deaf ear.So there must be a proper vaccination and birth control of dogs, Otherwise the live’s of the people especially school going children.
I whole request you to please take up this issue with the concern dept.
MENANCE ARE CAUSED BY “HUMANS” TO THE SOCIETY & NT BY THE POOR VOICELESS STRAY ANIMALS .
IF EVERY HUMAN TAKES THE RESPONSIBILITY OF FEEDING THEM , THE PROBLEM IS SOLVED .

I truly agree with you. Humans are more dangerous than animals. The destruction that they are causing to society and Mother Nature are far beyond than these innocent animals. Just that these animals are voiceless and helpless so it’s easier to blame them and take any harass them.
Control on Stray Dods is also important to save wildlife (Black nacked Cranes)….The Bird of UTI Ladakh.
What is the adoption rate of Dogs ? Focus should also be on adoption of Indian Community Dogs. Also train them for gaurding, search and rescue in earthquakes. Turkey failed in doing so.
i dont understand why people are after the god’s creation…. i just visit ladakh in jan last 2023… condition of dogs and other animals are so pathetic there ..no food, water any facility is provided to cure their lives… by govt or NGO…shame on people of ladakh and govt of ladak …only looting money… but no service ….-0 points
I appreciate the thought that higher authorities has put up for our voiceless.But this concern is not about only one state or country this human and animal conflict is spreading everywhere.As a animal rights activist i could say we should all drive one campaign one agenda one awareness and one rule spread sheet for resolving this nuisance created by humans and animals both as e every species have right to birth and right to freedom so we have to take wise decisions for our animals since they can’t speak up for themselves.
The law is clear. Animals have a right to live. We so called humans have become a bane on Planet Earth destroying our beautiful planet and the animals that have a right to exist. So factor in empathy, compassion and in the name of the so called Mission mode campaign do not harm them with cruel catching methods. Public servants are not above the law and need to abide by the law and the Constitution
