Farmers sell fresh vegetables produced in Ladakh Green Houses

Leh, Feb 06:  Executive Councillor, LAHDC Leh, Ghulam Mehdi, and Secretary, Agriculture, Ravinder Kumar, inaugurated the sale of fresh vegetables produced in the poly-carbonate Ladakh Green Houses at Main Market, Leh today.

Around three quintals of fresh vegetables produced in poly-carbonate Ladakh Green Houses by the farmers from Taru, Basgo, and Nimoo villages were for sale. 

Executive Councillor Ghulam Mehdi shared that Ladakh, in the true sense is treading on the path to achieving Atma Nirbhar Ladakh as envisioned by PM Narendra Modi to make Atma Nirbhar Bharat and wants to congratulate everyone and the farmers especially. He expressed happiness over the success of Ladakh Green Houses, provided under the Mission Organic Development Initiative (MODI) scheme, in providing fresh organic vegetables in winter.

Secretary Ravinder Kumar shared that the fresh produce of Ladakh Green Houses is for sale to raise awareness on the success of the poly-carbonate greenhouses. He added that millets are showcased to promote and raise awareness about its importance as United Nations has declared the year 2023 as the ‘International Year of Millets’. He appreciated the support and research provided by DRDO and SKUAST in promoting poly-carbonate greenhouses and millets. 

Secretary Ravinder Kumar added that Ladakh lacks micronutrients in winter, and the availability of fresh vegetables produced in Ladakh Green Houses is an achievement and a source to enhance farmers’ income.

Chief Agriculture Officer, Leh, Thinles Dawa; Director, DIHAR, O P Chaurasia; Agriculture Extension Officers; officers and field staff from SKUAST and agriculture were also present.

  1. Such initiatives are need of the hour which is most appropriate for local environmental condition. This utilizes natural sun light Ladakh is truly blessed with 300 days in a year. It has potential to make Laddakh export hub of organic vegetable.

  2. The phenomenal work done by DIHAR in the past 3 decades is amazing. I had the opportunity to interact with Mr OP Chaurasia just 2 days ago, and his commitment to the field is laudable. Ladakh has the best apricots in the world, and thankfully they have been GI tagged recently. The size of the individual vegetable growing in these greenhouses is also amazing. I hope more people take up green house farming in Ladakh.
