LAHDC Leh to celebrate April 01 as “Bhoti Day”

Leh, Apr 02: Under the chairmanship of the Chairman/CEC, LAHDC, Leh, a special Executive Council meeting was held today to discuss the celebration of “Bhoti language day” in Leh where it was decided to celebrate April 01 every year as “Bhoti language day”.

The meeting was attended by all the Executive Councillors and DC/CEO LAHDC Leh. CEC Gyalson felicitated and expressed his gratitude to the Member Parliament Ladakh, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal for moving a Private Member Bill in the Lok Sabha to include Bhoti Language in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution on 1st April 2022.

Considering it a historic move, the Executive Council of LAHDC Leh unanimously decided to celebrate 1st April as Bhoti language day in Leh Ladakh, symbolizing the significance of the day in the future and this year the day shall be celebrated on 4th April.

Further, the Executive Council of LAHDC Leh appealed to the civil societies and the general public to celebrate ‘Bhoti language day’ in their respective capacities.

While on the other side, many took to social media platforms to express their resentment against the use of term “Bhoti” for the language while the actual name is cited as “Ladakhi” and the script as “Egay”.

Social Activist Sajjad Hussain Kargili stated on Twitter, “Bhoti doesn’t stand as a language and it can hardly be called a script too! We request the government to set up a committee in order to find out the reality of this myth.”
